3 1 15 The Preacher s Homiletical Commentary John 3 1 15 EXPLANATORY AND CRITICAL NOTES John 3 1 In John 2 23 we read of many who believed in Jesus because of the miracles He wrought But their belief was so imperfect that Jesus had no faith in it Here however we have a man of a different stamp God having given him to be our Prophet Priest and King we must give up ourselves to be ruled and taught and saved by him And here is the great gospel benefit that whoever believes in Christ shall not perish but shall have everlasting life God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself and so saving it

Verse 1 CHAPTER III The conversation between Nicodemus and our Lord about the new birth and faith in his testimony 1 15 The love of God the source of human salvation 16 Who are condemned and who are approved 17 21 Jesus and his disciples come to Judea and baptize 22 John baptizes in AEnon 23 24 1 There was a man Read But there was a man Our division of chapters breaks the connection and the omission of the conjunction leads us to think of the visit of Nicodemus as quite distinct from what has gone before whereas it really rises out of it comp John 3 2 with John 2 23

1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of the Jews 2 The same came to Jesus by night and said unto him Rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from God for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except God be with him 3 Jesus answered and said unto him Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born a Do not imitate what is evil but what is good John gave us two clear examples one good Gaius and one bad Diotrephes and he now applies the point follow the good for we serve a good God and those who follow Him will likewise do good i John did not excommunicate Diotrephes though as an apostle he had the authority to do so

This man came to Jesus by night and said to him Rabbi we know that you are a teacher come from God for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him Jesus answered him Truly truly I say to you unless one is born anew born again he cannot see the kingdom of God John 3 1 3 RSV Ignoring the fact that the apostles and many Old Testament proph ets not to mention Jesus Himself were poor and persecuted the proponents of this false teaching brazenly appeal to the greed and selfishness of their spiritually na ve audiences

The natural man cannot comprehend spiritual things they must be spiritually discerned The new birth is therefore necessary that we may have a spirit within us which can see or understand the kingdom of God but until a man is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God John 3 4 5 God just goes ahead and loves and not only loves but gives the world God s only beloved Son over to death The one who dies for you clearly has a significant claim on you and John makes that clear God s love surprising all encompassing unasked for and undeserved is also given unconditionally
